2015-10-05I’ve always been very proud of my German heritage and am a frequent visitor to my hometown’s German festivals. So when I saw my dear friend and fellow customer, Jen Stolze, rocking a Rare Dirndl, I knew I wanted one. I had seen dirndls before and hadn’t really looked for one, until recently. I went onto the Rare Dirndl website, and instantly fell in love with the In Bloom dirndl. Now, I am not the fashion maven, but I do love lace overlay, and I loved how the lace looked against various colors and with different blouses. I love that I can dress it up in any way and make it my own, while still looking feminine. Once the cooler weather comes rolling around, I definitely plan on pairing my dirndl with my Chuck Taylors!

DSCN0002So I decided to order the In Bloom dirndl, with a blouse, skirt and apron. My favorite color is dark blue and I also loved the Damask print. I wore it for the first time to Cincinnati Donaschwaben’s Schwabenfest. I received so many compliments! It made me feel great to wear some of my favorite prints and colors, while showing off my German pride. Not to be outdone, I also wore my dirndl to an Irish punk concert (Flogging Molly, to be exact) that I had attended with a friend that night. Needless to say, the dirndl was a hit for the whole weekend!

In my life I wear many hats. I’m a mom of 4, a music teacher to many, and a leader of a 12 piece band. But honestly, I’m just a German girl at heart!

Erika -Klaberheads -Leopard DirndlI recently purchased the leopard print Rare Dirndl and couldn’t wait to wear it for the first time.  When I saw it on the website, I knew it was a fit for me. Traditional in fit, but the print roars with personality! This dirndl feels great—so comfortable, yet elegant and sexy, too!

As I mentioned, I am a leader of a German band that plays many significant Oktoberfests throughout the mid-West, and other parts of the country. 2015 is a special year for our band, the Klaberheads, because it marks our 85th anniversary!  My grandfather started the band in 1930 once he arrived from Germany. After he died, my Dad took leadership, and in 2006, he turned it over to me. It’s very much a family affair—my Mom plays accordion, my Uncle sings, my husband plays guitar and sax, and my 14 year old daughter sings, too! During the months of August through October, we are Festing every weekend. Places like Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati are the most crowded.  In November we head to Texas to play at the annual Wurstfest. I like to present a different look at each venue. Sometimes I wear lederhosen, and then I have about three dirndls that I rotate. But now I have four!!

I was disappointed that I wouldn’t get to display my new Rare Dirndl until the Fest season, but then we got a call to perform at the Hofbrauhaus in Cleveland this past January. Yeah!!  And wouldn’t you know, a man from another band came up to me and said, “You must be wearing a Rare Dirndl.”  I proudly said, “Yes!”
CLEC erika cut outs copyI am so grateful that Rare Dirndl exists. It gives German girls like me who do what I do, options!  Really stylish and beautiful options. (It’s also so nice to meet another Erika who spells their name the right way, with a K 😉 )

Karen Rare Dirndl

I love love love celebrating my German (Donauschwaben) Heritage. I am first generation American and nothing helps me celebrate my heritage better than wearing Dirndln. I have been wearing Dirndln my entire life but I love my Rare Dirndln because of how modern they are while still having a traditional feel. I now have 4 Rare Dirndln, some extra blouses, an extra apron, and accessories (incuding a winter hat and Edelweiss wrap bracelets).

Karen-Blackhawks DirndlMy first Rare Dirndl is my Blackhawks Dirndl which I got shortly after the Hawks won the 2010 Stanley Cup. I was born and raised in Chicago and am excited to combine my love of Chicago, sports, and German wear. I like to wear this Dirndl in other cities/states to show off my pride!

My second Rare Dirndl is my Sunflower Dirndl. This Dirndl is great for wearing in the Chicago Von Steuben German Day Parade. I recently also got the Weltmeister apron to wear with this Dirndl. I like to wear it at oktoberfests. It’s also perfect for Milwaukee German Fest with my black blouselette.

Germany DirndlKaren-Dirndl ChicagoDirndl Nummer Drei is one of my favorites. I feel so great when I wear this Dirndl. It’s the perfect length for dancing with the Nocheinmal Tanzgruppe of the American Aid Society of German Descendants. When it’s really hot in the summer, I wear my grey blouselette with it. Perfection!

And finally, my custom Dirndl. It’s the most flattering Dirndl I own. It’s elegant, classy, modern, and gorgeous! I often wear this Dirndl at the annual Landestrachtenfest der Donauschwaben. This Dirndl is very special to me because I know that Erika specially designed this piece just for me and it is one-of-a-kind.Karen Custom Dirndl

I’m looking forward to the next event where I can show off my Dirndln. I can’t wait for summer Dirndl wearing season!

Rare Dirndl Customer Spotlight: Allison Jahn Bluvas

Allison Jahn Bluvas – Milwaukee, WI

Rare Dirndl - Milwaukee Dirndls

Rare Dirndl - Milwaukee DirndlsFor years, I have admired and borrowed my sister’s dirndls. My sister, Lauren, always has the right blend of fashion and German tradition. I wanted to bring that same fashion and tradition to my wedding festivities. It was time to buy my first dirndl, and my sister recommended Rare Dirndl. At the time, I was living in Boston, finishing graduate school, and planning to move back to Milwaukee. My friends and family planned a Brewer’s bachelorette tailgate and game. With a quick search on the Rare Dirndl website, I found the perfect dirndl – The Royal Treatment Dirndl!

From the first email, Rare Dirndl - Milwaukee DirndlsErika was friendly, easy to work with, and quick to respond to my questions. I began envisioning myself at my bachelorette party in a pop of blue. When the vibrant blue dirndl arrived, I added the yellow apron (my sister’s of course) and a brewer’s pin to be the model fan and bride-to-be. My bachelorette party was a huge success. I felt special and beautiful in my Rare Dirndl. I made good use of the dirndl since then. I have also had my eye on a few other Rare Dirndl designs and recently bought the Edelweiss Wrap Bracelet, which is cute and comfortable. I love celebrating my German heritage, and Erika has created designs that are fresh and vibrant with the perfect touch of tradition. I look forward to my next dirndl from Rare! Vielen Dank Erika!

Rare Dirndl Customer Spotlight: Alayna Whitney

Alayna Whitney – Kent, Ohio

My name is Alayna and I am 24 years old and an active member in the Akron Ohio Donauschwaben and I dance in both the Juggendgruppe and adult Tanzgruppe. While I am not of German heritage, my mother married into the culture and I grew up making it my own.

When I am not dancing and celebrating my adoptive heritage, I find myself with my nose buried in a book or riding my horse. In these photographs, I am at the Akron German Family Society Oktoberfest which took place the second week in September of 2014. One picture is of my sister and I, one of me and my dance partner sharing a pre-performance selfie and one of me dancing in my dirndl. I love to tell people how I stumbled upon my Rare Dirndl. For about five years, I had been searching the internet and Europe for a Dirndl that matches my taste in literature, art and music as I felt my dirndl should reflect my personality, but had been unsuccessful.

When I went to the Donauschwaben labor day competition this past year my friends took me over to look at the Rare Dirndls. To be completely honest I had never heard of Rare Dirndl, but I was immediately taken with the care and quality of the dirndls and how each one seemed to be unique. While browsing the rack, I found “The Raven” Dirndl and fell in love instantly, as Edgar Allan Poe is one of my favorite reads! Without a second thought, I tried one of two dresses that were there and one fit—as I imagine Cinderella’s glass slipper fit only her. So I purchased it that day. Since then I have worn the dirndl for every dancing event I get the chance to and am always receiving compliments on the dirndl. One of my favorite things about Rare Dirndl is that each and every dirndl (as you can tell many of my friends and fellow dancers own them from the one photograph) is well made and shouts whatever inner spirit the wearer wants it to reflect. For me, throwing on the sweat-heart off-shoulder blouse with a simple necklace, no knee socks and black satin bloomers with my Rare Dirndl, I feel beautiful and confident. For me, my dirndl shouts: Be Bold.

Rare Dirndl Customer Spotlight: Christina Forst

Christina Forst – North White Plains, NY

My name is Christina Forst and I currently live in New York. This past September, I had the opportunity to travel to Germany for two weeks to visit Berlin, several small towns of Bavaria, and Munich, including attending Oktoberfest for three days. In advance of my departure, I wanted to make sure I was uniquely “outfitted” with some stylish German tracht. When I came across Rare Dirndl online (based in my hometown of Chicago, no less!) I knew that I had found my winner. I loved all the diverse styles and accessories, and, after ordering one dirndl, several off-the-shoulders and aprons to mix & match, as well as a Bavarian hat with a matching blouse that I simply couldn’t resist, I was ready for my adventure. I received so many compliments on my outfits from friends, fellow party-goers, and even local Germans. I think the uniqueness and versatility of all the styles are my two favorite things about Rare Dirndl, as well as the personalized service I received from Erika in the lead-up to my shipment.

My mother was born in Nuremberg, Germany and I also have German heritage on my father’s side, so I was very honored to be able to go there for the first time and better understand that part of my family history. And, although my boyfriend is not German by birth, you can see from the photos that he too fully embraced the experience in his lederhosen. We have had so much fun this past year preparing for our trip, not only with our outfits, but also by learning about German culture, visiting all of the amazing beer halls in and around NYC, becoming Bundesliga fans (we even attended a Bayern Munich game while there!), and believe it or not, learning about the intricacies and complexities of German beer and brewing techniques. In truth, I think we suffered a fair amount of “Germany withdrawal” after returning to the States, but we managed to resurrect our outfits back in New York in late October at Bear Mountain State Park’s annual Oktoberfest celebration, as well as at a family party where we passed out gifts we had brought back from Germany for our nieces and nephews. Thank you to Erika and the team at Rare Dirndl for helping to make this entire experience most unforgettable. (I’m addicted to dirndls now, so I will be back!)

Rare Dirndl Customer Spotlight: Kathleen Martini

Kathleen Martini – Columbus, OH

I’m Kathleen Martini, a 20-year-old Schwob living in Columbus, Ohio and dancing for the Trenton Donauschwaben Jugendgruppe. I have four Rare dirndls, one of which is custom, and I’m a little more than obsessed.

The custom dirndl Erika made for me when she was moving locations is probably the most beautiful piece of clothing I own. It is a vision in white, and I love it, but I think another piece she did is even more beautiful…

I’m half-Schwob, half-Irish, with my mom being the only non-genetic Schwob in the family. She always comes to Labor Day and whatever other club events we drag her to, sporting a dirndl more often than most, and throughout the years, she’s always joked about getting a green dirndl to show off her Irish pride. When I discovered Erika a few years ago, she posed the perfect solution to my mom’s problem. I emailed her, and she drew up a design for a beautiful shamrock-themed dirndl that I gave my mom for a late Mother’s Day present. My mom loves it still, and I’ll be stealing it out of her closet one of these days.

Erika is an artist, and I love her visions for dirndls. I love the tradition of our Donauschwaben heritage, and I know she does, too. It’s beautiful to see her create modern pieces that are still tributes to our roots.
